Sen. Elizabeth Warren wants crypto miners to disclose energy use, emissions

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D.-Mass.) is seeking action from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy to make cryptocurrency miners report their energy use and emissions, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing a letter.Warren alongside Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and a group of Democratic Party lawmakers asked the EPA and DOE to provide a briefing on their ability to require crypto miners' disclosures, Bloomberg noted. The deadline for that written description is August 15.The move comes as regulators increasingly scrutinize the crypto mining industry given its intensive use of fossil fuel-based energy, namely from Proof-of-Work-based blockchains like bitcoin (BTC-USD).New York, in particular, has been at the forefront of this issue as the state's regulator aims to replace PoW mining with Proof-of-Stake mining, which uses cleaner energy sources.Eco-friendly crypto miners include: Soluna Holdings (SLNH), Greenidge Generation (GREE), DMG Blockchain (OTCQB:DMGGF), Argo Blockchain (ARBK) and Powerbridge Technologies (PBTS).Last year, Warren sent a letter to Greenidge Generation CEO on crypto mining climate concerns.
