Cryptocurrency fraudsters tried to take advantage of today’s Apple event by using a fake YouTube live broadcast to promote their scams. The Verge reports that thousands of individuals were duped into watching the fake broadcast, with an odd title, “Apple Event Live. Apple CEO Tim Cook: Apple & Metaverse in 2022.” In reality, it was broadcasting an old interview with Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. It displayed a previous interview with Cook done by CNN in 2018. There was an overlay on the CNN Money logo with the phrase “Apple Crypto Event 2022.” The video feed had Bitcoin and Ethereum logos, with bold lettering “URGENT NEWS” written at the bottom. With several Apple-related keywords, the fraudsters behind the scam were able to push the video to the top of the searches during the event. Aim Of The Scammers The tricksters wanted to attract potential visitors into clicking links that sent them to a doubtful website that promoted cryptocurrency fraud. Scammers opted for the identical scheme at an Apple event in September last year. According to reports, the fake YouTube feed had a remarkable 165,000 viewers. It included a statement claiming Apple would allegedly purchase 100,000 Bitcoin and have a giveaway event.
